PhD Scholarship: Modelling for Metal Additive Manufacturing, UNSW Canberra, Australia

About the Project

We are offering a PhD scholarship (3.5 years, full-time, fully-funded, competition-based) for motivated candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra, Australia. The PhD research will contribute to an Australian Research Council (ARC)-funded project aimed at enhancing the mechanical properties of advanced 3D printed alloys.

Become a part of a young team with a strong national and international network in the fast-growing field of metal additive manufacturing. Doing a PhD with us gives you unique opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge and impact the future by contributing to sustainable advancements in tomorrow’s manufacturing technologies!

Information about the research:

This project is funded by the Australian Research Council to boost alloy properties in advanced manufacturing by leveraging the synergy between state-of-the-art simulations and experiments. The project is in collaboration with leading universities and research organisations, including RMIT, ANSTO, the University of Sydney, Denmark Technical University, and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Germany).

We welcome candidates from mechanical engineering, materials science/engineering, simulation engineering, and related fields. Students with a software engineering degree might also be considered if the candidate is motivated to gain knowledge in the above-mentioned fields.

The PhD project is within the broad scope of ‚Modelling for Metal Additive Manufacturing‘. There is potential to explore a range of different topics suited to the student’s interest and skillset. This may include but is not limited to

– microstructure evolution during metal 3D printing

– residual stresses under metal 3D printing conditions

– processing-microstructure-property relationships in metal 3D printing

– thermal modelling of metal 3D printing

The potential PhD candidate must have experience with mechanical/materials simulations and programming proficiency. Experience in crystal plasticity modelling and high-performance computing is highly desirable. The topics mentioned above include mathematical & numerical model development and optimisation.

The position offers excellent opportunities for future research duties within academia as well as industry or the public sector.

How to apply:

If you are eligible and interested, please send an expression of interest to Dr Olga Zinovieva () with the following information:

– Brief statement of purpose/cover letter (please describe your interest and how your skills and experiences qualify you for the position)

– Academic CV, including publication list or links to your Google Scholar page, ResearchGate page, Scopus ID, etc.

– Academic transcripts

A wide range of prestigious scholarships is being offered for candidates of exceptional potential to undertake a higher degree by research. Successful students will receive a full waiver of tuition fees and a generous 38.4k AUD/year (tax-free, 2025 rate).

Masters by Research/Research Practicum (internship)

Note that Masters by Research degree pathways can be considered if you are eligible to apply for Australia Awards Scholarships (https://www.dfat.gov.au/people-to-people/australia-awards/australia-awards-scholarships-opening-and-closing-dates). Research Practicum (internship) is also possible if you are eligible and willing to cover travel and living costs (https://www.unsw.edu.au/study/international-students/study-abroad#researchpracticum).
