Assistant Professor (Tenure Track Position) Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering

UNIVERSITY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
FACULTY OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ENGINEERING
TENURE TRACK POSITIONS
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
COMPETITION #15A25

UPEI is located on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in
the traditional district of Epekwitk. We are grateful to live, work, and learn on these traditional
lands of the Mi’kmaq people.

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering (FSDE) at the University of Prince Edward
Island (UPEI) welcomes applications from exceptional candidates for tenure-track faculty
positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (exceptional senior applicants may also be
considered). We are appealing to candidates with a strong interest in teaching engineering
design and/or fundamental courses, and ideally one of three faculty focus areas of Sustainable
Energy, Bioresources, and Mechatronics.

The anticipated start date of these appointments is August 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed upon
date.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and
laboratories; maintain a strong program of research and scholarly work that includes the
supervision of students; and to fulfill service obligations to both the Faculty and the University.
Successful candidates will also be expected to demonstrate an ongoing understanding of
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) as it applies to both educational assessment and collegial
governance.

Appointment rank, step and salary are commensurate with credentials and experience. Fulltime, permanent faculty receive a comprehensive fringe benefits package including group life,
accidental death and dismemberment, supplemental health, travel insurance, pension, and
long-term disability insurance. These appointments are subject to final budgetary approval.

About our Program

UPEI’s Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering program is collaborative,
transdisciplinary, and centered on engineering design.

• Sustainable design engineers use design skills, engineering knowledge, math and
science to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to modern-day problems.
• A sustainable solution is one in which all factors and parties are considered. It goes
beyond delivering an efficient, attractive, on-time, and on-budget solution. It also works
to build co-creative and respectful relationships with community and industry partners,
and to incorporate students, instructional, and technical staff as a multi-disciplinary team.
• The resulting value-centered designs consider both how to achieve technical goals and
the impact of the design on people, the environment, and society.

FSDE graduates spend much of their program in an experiential learning environment which
develops these skills and builds valuable experience.

The teaching model used in the FSDE’s undergraduate program is unique in Canada. It is
based on an innovative design clinic model that is integrated across all years of the program. In
design clinics, students are immersed in hands-on, project-based, experiential learning while
working on real projects for a wide range of partners from the community, municipalities,
government, industry and others. The program provides students with a solid technical
foundation which supports the development of their engineering design skills. As part of the
teaching model, the program also demands that students learn and exhibit the broad range of
skills and attributes necessary to succeed as a professional engineer.

The FSDE’s capacity in research and scholarly work and in graduate programming is thriving.
We currently offer both an MSc and a PhD program in Sustainable Design Engineering. Faculty
members are actively engaged in research and scholarly work with significant support from
industry, tri-council funding, and other federal and provincial funding programs. Much of this
activity is naturally interdisciplinary and reaches beyond the current focus areas of the
undergraduate program: mechatronics, bioresources, and sustainable energy.

The FSDE is housed in a cutting-edge 7,000 square-meter facility specifically designed to foster
innovation and industry-university collaboration. With a view of enhancing the student learning
experience, the facility represents a move away from the traditional classroom and includes
design studios, ideation spaces, well-equipped workshops and laboratories, and a full
complement of technical support staff.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates must:

-have earned a doctoral degree in an engineering discipline that is closely aligned with
sustainable design and/or one of the FSDE focus areas
-possess experience and/or an interest in experiential teaching
-possess a compelling track-record and future-plan for impactful scholarly activity
-be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (or Engineer-in-Training) in the Province
of Prince Edward Island and must receive full registration as a professional engineer within five
years of initial appointment to the position.

Industry experience, or skills gained through collaborative work with industry, including
proficiency in engineering design; collaborative R&D projects; entrepreneurship; technology
transfer, licensing and commercialization; and intellectual property, will be considered a strong
asset. Practice or interest in teaching engineering design will also be considered a strong asset.

Application Instructions:

Candidates must submit to the individual listed below, a cover letter citing the competition
number listed above, a full curriculum vitae, and a list of three (3) referees including an email
address for each. Additional statements, as indicated below, must also be submitted for the
application to be considered complete.

• A statement outlining the candidate’s overall teaching philosophy. Please include any
experience with and plans for hands-on, experiential-based learning, engineering design
education, and the development of innovative teaching methods.
• A statement of research and scholarly work outlining the candidate’s scholarly interests
and plan for establishing a foundation for an enduring and productive involvement in
engineering research and scholarly activity over the next five years. A compelling plan
for securing funding through industry partnerships, tri-council or other programs as
applicable is essential.
• A one-page statement on how the candidate will implement the principles of Equity,
Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in their teaching, research, and scholarly work.
• In your cover letter, please specify your teaching interests and expertise, noting whether
you are prepared to teach engineering design courses, fundamental courses, and
indicate any specialization you have in one of the following key areas: Sustainable
Energy, Bioresources, Mechatronics, or Design.

An application package including and addressing all the elements listed above must be
submitted electronically as a single PDF file to:
