Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor (Teaching) position in Materials Science and Engineering, to support active and experiential learning initiatives in the classroom. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.

The Schulich School of Engineering is a strong promoter of innovative teaching and learning practices, with a focus on active and experiential learning. The school has recently renovated an extensive amount of space to facilitate meaningful studio-based active learning classrooms where students can engage with classwork in Schulich Studio, a dynamic, team-based learning environment. The common first-year engineering experience in the Schulich School of Engineering is delivered with a strong focus on active learning in the classroom. Active learning includes project-based learning, classroom demos, hands-on learning, discussions, worksheets, and other active approaches. This teaching style is demonstrated to support deeper learning and enhanced engagement for the students. In addition, the teaching environment offers an exciting opportunity for academic staff to work, mentor and be mentored in a dynamic teaching team with other engineering education innovators. We also hope that the candidate will be a strong contributor to continued development, research and dissemination of these or similar innovative teaching practices in both the first year and upper year/graduate programs.

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is currently inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) to expand its core team of innovative engineering instructors. Initially, roughly half of the new faculty members’ teaching duties will be devoted to the delivery and continual improvement of the first-year program while the other half will involve contributing to upper-year courses in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, primarily in areas relating to Materials Science. Candidates with an earned doctoral or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Engineering Physics or a related field, or those who will have earned a doctoral or master’s degree in one of these fields by the anticipated start date are invited to apply for the position in Materials Science and Engineering.

The successful candidates are expected to be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Position Requirements
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
• Excellence or the potential for excellence in teaching at the university level
• Experience with or strong interest in innovative and evidence-based teaching practices, especially active learning classrooms and experiential learning
