The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Emergency Care BC (ECBC), at the Provincial Health Services Authority invite applications for a full-time UBC faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Grant-Tenure Track) or Associate Professor (Grant-Tenure). The successful candidate is expected to hold the role of Scientific Director with ECBC, for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review and funding.

The UBC DEM is a provincially integrated Department committed to clinical and academic leadership in the creation and exchange of knowledge to promote excellence in emergency care, with 750 clinical faculty members, 9 academic faculty members, and 75 staff members and a close collaborative relationship with the UBC Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The Department is home to the largest Royal College Emergency Medicine program in Canada, with 67 residents across four distributed residency sites. There is a close collaborative relationship with leadership of UBC’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Emergency Medicine CCFP(EM). The role of the UBC DEM is to discover new and better ways to care for patients presenting to emergency departments and to share the knowledge of best practices with all emergency medicine practitioners and postgraduate and undergraduate learners. The Department’s faculty members have an impressive record of research and discovery. Academic and Clinical Emergency Physicians have taught residents and medical students at UBC for decades.

ECBC is a provincial Health Improvement Network, focusing on improving patient outcomes and enhancing patient and provider experiences in Emergency Care across British Columbia Emergency Care BC brings together operations leaders, emergency providers and quality improvement experts from all health authorities in British Columbia. Together with partner organizations and groups, ECBC aims to improve health outcomes, service quality and coordination of emergency care services by facilitating the implementation and scaling of best practices and monitoring the uptake of evidence-based interventions. ECBC is developing a scientific program that will play a central role in implementing and evaluating care delivery and health systems planning and developing a learning health system. Key responsibilities include supporting ECBC’s scientific program, developing data streams, analytics, and reporting, and integration and implementation of findings into education and practice.

Reporting to the Head of the DEM and Academic Lead of ECBC, and the Executive Director of ECBC, the incumbent will play a key role within UBC’s DEM and ECBC by developing, supporting and executing a shared vision of implementing a Learning Health System in emergency care across British Columbia. This position will leverage ECBC’s expertise in health system operations and design, as well as existing research programs within the DEM to facilitate dissemination, implementation and monitoring of evidence-based health interventions using a Learning Health System (LHS) approach to improve emergency care. The incumbent will also develop research and provide guidance to other researchers in high priority areas for ECBC.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching activities of the Department, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the DEM and the Faculty of Medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Health Research, Epidemiology or Statistics, or MD with at minimum Masters-level training in Epidemiology, Implementation Science Statistics or equivalent.

Assistant Professor, GTT: The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and scholarly activity.
Associate Professor, GT: The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, a growing body of productive scholarly activity, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the Department of Emergency Medicine and the University.

The successful candidate will have experience in developing and executing high quality scientific research, applying for and securing research funding, managing research teams and collaborating with diverse stakeholders and health services delivery teams, and implementing research interventions in complex medical environments. Training in Quality Improvement methodologies and Knowledge Translation / Mobilization methodologies is an asset. Leadership experience and/or training an asset. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The expected salary for this position is $130,000 – $180,000 per annum.
