Bioinspired soft robots for natural environments

University of Southampton

About the Project

Supervisory Team: Dr Hareesh Godaba

We are inviting applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship in the field of soft robotics. Interested candidates should get in touch with Dr. Hareesh Godaba () with their up-to-date CV and a cover letter.

Robots with versatile locomotion capabilities such as ability to traverse rugged terrains while sensing and adapting to external cues can help address environmental, biodiversity, and industrial challenges. This project focuses on the development of novel bioinspired soft robots based on smart materials for complex locomotion and manipulation in natural environments.

Soft materials offer a unique potential for developing the next generation of field robots due to their compliance, flexibility, and adaptability, which allow robots to conform to various object shapes and interact safely with their environment. This project aims to create highly capable and adaptive soft robotic systems with integrated sensing and actuation capabilities. Learning from natural organisms, you will investigate how to develop hardware architectures that allow the robot to utilize their physical structure and material properties for decision-making. This approach aims to reduce the computational burden on traditional control systems by allowing the robot’s body to perform some of the required decision-making.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in mechanical, mechatronics, electrical, or materials engineering, with a willingness to learn complementary subjects. Keen interest in experimental hands-on work and prototyping is crucial.

Entry Requirements

• A minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree and/or a postgraduate masters degree in a STEM subject is required. Background in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, materials or electrical engineering will be suitable.

• Previous experience in soft robotics, soft materials, or hands-on development of robots/mechatronic systems will be considered advantageous.

• Due to the interdisciplinarity of the research topics, interest and ability to learn new subjects is essential.

Closing date: 30 April 2025. Interviews will be conducted after the application closing date.

Funding:

We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships. For more information please visit PhD Scholarships Doctoral College University of Southampton
