Chief Macro Policy Strategist, Managing Director

Position description

The Chief Macro Policy Strategist is a highly visible role within SSGA’s Investment Organization advising investment teams and clients on the potential impacts of global macro trends, policy developments, and geopolitical events for asset management and portfolio management.  In this capacity, the Chief Macro Policy Strategist provides critical insights for investors across all regions – Americas, Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific – and is a key contributor to the firm’s top line investment views.  

The Chief Macro Policy Strategist leads a team responsible for developing and executing research that identifies the key implications of government policy, foreign/international relations and geopolitical risk on portfolios across all asset classes and for clients that span a wide range of institutional and individual investor segments.  The team also provides insights and recommendations to leadership on how to navigate potential risks and opportunities arising from geopolitical shifts.   This team works closely with SSGA’s Chief Economist and Economics team and the Global Investment Strategy & Research team.  This team also supports the broader Investment organization as well as the Commercial Business and Client Coverage organizations. 

In addition, as a Team Leader this role is responsible for developing a high performing team that can effectively coordinate thought leadership, positioning, collateral development, and other deliverables.

 

Key Responsibilities

The Chief Macro Policy Strategist is a Managing Director who reports directly to the Global Chief Investment Strategist. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifies key macro, policy, and geopolitical developments that will impact financial markets

  • Conducts research on how these developments are transmitted to different asset classes and investors across the Americas, Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific regions

  • Operates as the lead expert on geopolitical strategy globally

  • Leads SSGA’s macro digital research on how technological change in finance has systemic implications for global capital allocation

  • Leads research dedicated to official institutions whose investment mandates are aligned with policy objectives

  • Works closely with the Economics team and Investment Strategy & Research teams

  • Collaborates with the Investment and Distribution teams to bring key insights to clients around the world

  • Contribute to marquis publications such as the firm’s Global Market Outlook as well as targeted macroeconomic and portfolio level thematic ideas

  • Extensive travel required

  • Deep understanding of financial, trade, and foreign policy & regulations for economies/countries around the world and strong macroeconomics background

  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage directly with clients, speak at conferences, and represent SSGA in an array of media forums

  • Strong strategic thinking skills and demonstrated success in driving vision to fruition

  • Experience across equities, bonds, commodities, real estate, private equity and credit

  • Knowledge of digital assets, regulatory developments, and policy landscape in major markets

  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and other emerging or disruptive technologies, regulatory developments, and policy landscape in major markets

  • Ability to collaborate and find consensus with teams that may have a wide range of views

Qualifications

Education & Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10-12 years of experience preferably within asset management; prior experience as a portfolio manager or technical researcher is a plus.

  • Experience in a similar role, academic qualification and/or professional designation essential; PhD preferred.

  • Ability to influence the business and counterparts and drive consensus.

  • Critical understanding of economics, policy and politics alongside strong understanding of financial theory and investments.

  • Ability to work with and influence internal and external stakeholders.

  • Positive, collaborative attitude with a strong team orientation.

  • Ambitious self-starter, able to perform in a team environment.

  • Strong communications skills for frequent external and internal presentations.
