  Compassionate Leadership Models for Enhancing Workplace Engagement Among Trauma Survivors: Fostering Workplace Well-being

About the Project

This project seeks to critically examine the extent to which Compassionate Leadership can positively impact the support of trauma survivors and contribute to establishing effective workplace wellbeing mechanisms. Compassionate Leadership is increasingly recognised as a transformative tool for fostering disclosure and creating psychologically safe environments for all, including individuals who have experienced trauma. The enduring impact of trauma, which can result from adverse experiences such as sexual abuse, physical violence, or emotional neglect, often persists into adulthood, adversely affecting individuals’ health and workplace well-being.

Compassionate Leadership, as defined by Gilbert (2013:36), involves “a sensitivity to suffering in self and others with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent it.” It encompasses not only experiencing and extending compassion but also creating systems that prioritise well-being. Evidence suggests that organisations with Compassionate Leadership benefit from more engaged, motivated staff with enhanced well-being (West, 2021). Despite its potential, however, Compassionate Leadership remains underexplored in the context of workplace support, well-being, and engagement for trauma survivors.

Existing organisational research has predominantly focused on mental health and disability support measures, leaving a critical gap in understanding how Compassionate Leadership can address the unique needs of trauma survivors. This project aims to bridge that gap by investigating how Compassionate Leadership behaviours and practices can foster compassionate relationships, enhance well-being, and support high performance in workplace settings. The project’s novel approach shifts the focus from the origins of trauma to understanding workplace experiences, leadership behaviours, and their interplay with survivor support. It seeks to develop a deep understanding of how organisations can implement Compassionate Leadership strategies to foster inclusive and supportive environments.

Using a qualitative, phenomenological methodology, the project will conduct in-depth interviews with trauma survivors, mental health and well-being professionals, line managers, and organisational leaders across the UK, focusing on a specific sector. This method is well-suited to building rapport with participants, enabling them to share their lived experiences candidly.

Additionally, the study will include knowledge-into-practice exchange discussions with organisational leaders to explore the practical applications of Compassionate Leadership in supporting trauma survivors. These discussions will provide an interactive and collaborative platform for leaders to share experiences and generate new insights. The project will leverage an established network to maximise its reach and impact, addressing a neglected but vital area of research. By building new theoretical and practical knowledge, this project aims to advance leadership practices, promote workplace well-being, and support trauma survivors in achieving their full potential.
