Legal expert – Middle East North Africa

MiCT is seeking a immigration expert case worker who can provide legal advice for media makers from the Middle East and North Africa. MiCT invites interested and qualified applicants to submit proposals by 23.03.2025, 23:59pm CET

1. Introducing MiCT

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation delivering expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision and agility. Through our collaborative work with our partners, we foster transparent, inclusive and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies that thrive.

Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT facilitates the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, radio and film production, magazine and book publishing, media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship is aimed at media professionals from conflict and crisis regions who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is currently focused on at-risk journalists and media makers from across the globe. This position is specific to support provided for Fellows in the Middle East and North Africa. Fellows receive financial support, expert safety advice, online training, legal advice, psycho-social support, and access to a global community of like-minded media professionals.

3. Description of the role

To support Fellows from the MENA region who are at risk due to their journalistic work, MiCT is looking for a legal expert to provide guidance and legal advice on issues relating to migration, work permits and journalism related court cases.

The service should cover the following aspects:

  • Assisting in navigating the migration procedures for various countries
  • Providing legal guidance and/or representation to Fellows actively charged in their respective home or exile countries in the region
  • Legal representation of Fellows in case of emergencies

The service is to be rendered flexibly on a needs-basis, remunerated at an hourly rate.

4. Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • Legal professional qualified in Egypt, Lebanon, Sudan, or Tunisia
  • Specialist knowledge of migration and work permit systems, particularly in Sudan, Egypt, Gaza, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Lebanon, Yemen, Irak and Syria
  • In-depth knowledge of immigration laws and procedures within the region
  • Familiarity with legal claims with regard to journalistic work
  • Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by media makers in the visa and work permit processes is a benefit
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, as well as security related needs
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required, working knowledge of relevant languages locally is an asset.
